Work Time Fun. Or, my mind-numbing work playlist.

For some reason I can't load imeem's main page at work, but I can open links to specific music or playlists in imeem.

Huh. I'll just post my playlist here to make things easier for me in terms of applying general audio anaesthesia during work, and to give those interested a glimpse of what kind of music I listen to.

Someone said that the mix of songs in all of my playlists makes her nauseous for some reason...maybe its because they had some Korn in them.

Work Time Blargh

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Resurrection

More or less a decade has passed since the release of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. However, Michiru Yamane's haunting score still populates my Winamp playlist even now - a feat not matched by the decent but utterly trite Eyes on Me, One-Winged Angel, or most other video game music (with the exception of arranged King of Fighters tracks).

That's why I was only a hair breadth's away from utter rapture when I came across Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Resurrection. It's a compilation of remixed SotN tracks by various musicians - no Niconico artists here, so steer clear if you're a bit racist with your vidya game music and don't like Western remixers.

I'm in love with the compilation's medley track created by one Joshua Morse. Titled "Heart of Vlad," Morse tackles the music not usually covered by most other remixers, who seem to favor Tragic Prince and Dance of Pales.

One brilliant example is his rendition of the Catacomb stage's BGM, Rainbow Cemetery (3:33). While it sticks close to the source material, Morse's Rainbow Cemetery is arguably a bit more crisp than the original with liberal amounts of drum beats and accentuating guitar riffs.

I also enjoyed his jazzy version of my favorite SotN track, Crystal Teardrop (6:07). For those who couldn't recognize the notes, it's the tune used in the Underwater Vein Stage. Morse took away the bass that made Crystal Teardrop quite distinct from others, but his cool jazz treatment more than makes up for it.

One of the reasons why I immensely liked Morse's take on Yamane's opus is that he doesn't stray too far from the original and alienate the fans of the soundtrack. If you loved SotN's music and still remember each and every tune, better give Morse's version a shot. And oh, a few lines taken from the cheesy yet priceless voice acting in the game are inserted, making for a few lulzy moments.

Liked it so far? Just drop me a line at my YM if you want to get the entire compilation of the SotN remix.

Überraschung, usw.

1. After a few weeks of all out writing and the subsequent episodes of insanity, I managed to finish the first/second/third/fourth/and god knows how many draft of my latest pet project. I finally got some time off to perform my role as a normal human being, and went out with a few pals.

Jet, the merchant and purveyor of all things awesome, got me a box of Kinder Surprise eggs from his latest business trip to HK. Kinder Eggs were actually a big part of my childhood - I first got them as a welcoming gift from a fellow Filipino when I had my two-month vacation in Germany (and, by extension, the other Schengen countries).

I had great memories with these chocolate eggs: they were filled with toys and other cool stuff, like a tiny pencil, or a tiny comic book. Since Tita gave me an entire box of Überraschung, it didn't take a lot of chocolate until I got sick of eating them, but I wanted to see more of the toys. I eventually ended up wasting a lot of chocolate (and getting a wonderful assortment of small stuff) to the consternation of my parents.

In any case, I got a box of three, and I'm happy. Here be a few pictures:

The box, and the egg.

The little guy inside the egg. Don't mess with him, he can turn you green with his ass alone.

2. On the same day Ryan and I found a copy of the official Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty graphic novel, with art by Ashley Wood. Here are a few snaps I took from my copy, and below is an exchange we had that quite eloquently sums up our general impression of the comic:

Me: I'm not sure about you, but I believe only pretentious fucks can justify the art.
Him: That's pretty....
Him: Ugh.
Him: I'm a pretentious fuck and even I can't justify it.
3. I'm currently enthralled with the live version of Shiina Ringo's Poltergeist, performed in her Electric Mole concert. Love, love, love, love. It's featured in the sidebar for now, for those who are interested.

1. I'm not sure if there's going to be a storm today in Manila, but I heard from my parents that there was a big one that hit Leyte yesterday. My father said that it will eventually pass my area, but eh, I hope it doesn't. Here's to hoping that the storm misses its flight.

I usually don't mind anyway - I consider the rain as my element - but we're supposed to go fireworks watching tomorrow, if they're still holding the weekly fireworks display. Still, when did they ever let storms go in the way of fireworks? I remember the first Pyro Olympics held in the country. Was it three years ago, when we all got drenched in the rain while waiting for a fireworks routine to start? I vaguely remember a Pepsi-branded tent scuttling across the grounds in the midst of the torrential rain.

The fireworks were still able to fly that night.

In any case, a storm or two is good to share with someone else.

2. I'm sorry for sleeping on you again last night. You do know how much of a sleepyhead I am, so. .__. But still, will you hold me again, as I get drowned in dreams?

3. I've been looping a certain video at work. This one's a sort-of guilty pleasure of mine, and I think I'm beginning to hate Taiko no Tatsujin for making me hooked to tunes of franchises I usually wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. But still, am happy, since it's not all the time that I find music that I somehow find...palatable.

The song in the video below, Agent Yoru wo Iku, is taken from the IDOLM@STER franchise. Yes, the very same IDOLM@STER that caters to rabid male otaku who probably rub themselves against love pillows of their favorite female anime characters at night. I think I'm hating myself right now, but I can't help but love the tune.

This video below is my favorite version so far, with the angelic Azusa Miura (the one with the long hair). Did I say that I like Azusa? I haven't yet? Well there, I like Azusa. Makoto's deep vocals serves as the perfect foil to her sweet voice, so...yeah. Just watch the video before I ramble on.

Sound tripping: Taiko no Tatsujin OST

Ever since I had my PSP flashed, two games became constant mainstays in my Memory Schtick: Taiko no Tatsujin Portable and Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2. To those who haven't heard of them yet, the Taiko no Tatsujin series is one of the best rhythm games around, with the best music selection provided you're a fan of anime, j-pop and video game soundtracks, and remixed classical music.

The gameplay is so simple, any child who knows how to hold the PSP, DS, PS controllers or taiko sticks (depends on what machine you're using, really) correctly can play it. There are only two buttons - one to bang the taiko drum, and another to tap the edge of the taiko. Simplistic, yes, but the simplicity of the game ends when one dares to tackle the hard and Oni (demon) mode.

But I'm not here to give a game review - I'm too tired for that right now - but I'd just like to ask anyone who's knowledgeable about J-music about this particular song found in Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2. I don't have any song info, and the only clue that I have about this track is that it's most probably a video game tune, because it's categorized as a "Namco Original." Here it is:

Any information about this song, which I'll use to search for its full version, is greatly appreciated. I'm so in love with this tune, I find myself playing through this song over and over again, and is just about the only tune that I cleared in hard and Oni mode.

In exchange, here's the crazy Wedding March Medley tune from Taiko no Tatsujin DS, which demonstrates through music just how a wedding reception can go wrong on so many levels (gotta love Chopin's Etude in E Major at the very end of the track).

Aaand I go off to bed nao.
